Vietnam sees strong recovery in jobs numbers

Vietnam has seen a strong recovery in its job numbers, with the number of working people aged 15 and above reaching 51.4 million in 1H2022, marking a 400,000 year-on-year rise, based on official data. 

Over the period, some 50.5 million of the workforce secured jobs, representing an annual increase of nearly 702,000 people, according to data from the General Statistics Office (GSO).

The underemployment rate fell 0.1 percentage points year-on-year, or 30,200 people, to 2.48%, with over 1.1 million people underemployed. 

Over 2Q2022, the number of employed workers grew in Vietnam’s three major economic sectors, with its strongest growth in the services sector. 

Workers’ average monthly income reached VND6.6 million (US$282.23) over the second quarter, demonstrating a quarter-on-quarter increase of VND206,000 (US$8.81).

The increase in wages showed a positive signal of Vietnam’s economic growth and recovery in the post-pandemic phase, said Nguyen Huy Minh, deputy head of the GSO.

The improvement in the country’s labour market was attributed to the rollout of the programme for socio-economic recovery and development, which offers specific measures to support employees in returning to work and those working in enterprises, said Pham Hoai Nam, Director of the GSO’s Population and Labour Statistics Department, reports VNA.
